The Anishnabek First Nations of Lac Simon and Long Point attended the 20th North American Caribou Workshop, held in Yellowknife from June 15 to 19, 2026, to represent the last seven woodland caribou currently in captivity. The conference theme, “United by the Caribou,” brought together numerous researchers, experts, scientists, managers, land stewards, Indigenous voices, and government officials from various provinces and the federal government to discuss their shared concern regarding the status of caribou across Turtle Island.

The week began with workshops on Monday and a cultural opening night for the conference hosted by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. The following days were devoted to several presentations as part of symposia on various topics, as well as plenary sessions.

The week ended with a cultural outing on Tłı̨chǫ government territory, in the Dene community of Behchokǫ̀, where the cultural and social significance of caribou (Ekwo) to the Dene was discussed.
